How to Install Minecraft Resource Packs

A complete, version-by-version guide for Java Edition, Bedrock, and Pocket Edition — with folder paths, troubleshooting, and tips for stacking multiple packs.

What is a resource pack?

A Minecraft resource pack (formerly called a "texture pack") replaces the default textures, sounds, models, and fonts of the game. Packs ship as .zip files for Java Edition and as .mcpack files for Bedrock/Pocket Edition. They never modify the game's code, so they're safe to swap in and out at any time.

Java Edition (PC / Mac / Linux)

1. Download the pack — keep it as a .zip, don't extract it.
2. Launch Minecraft and click Options → Resource Packs.
3. Click Open Pack Folder. Minecraft opens%appdata%\.minecraft\resourcepacks on Windows or~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/resourcepacks on macOS.
4. Drag the .zip into that folder.
5. Back in Minecraft, hover the pack and click the right-arrow to move it to the Selected column. Click Done.
6. Load any world to confirm the new look.

Bedrock Edition (Windows 10/11, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch)

1. Download the .mcpack file.
2. Double-click it — Minecraft opens automatically and imports the pack.
3. In-game, go to Settings → Global Resources (or per-world under Edit World → Resource Packs).
4. Tap Activate on your pack, then return to the world.

On consoles, transfer the .mcpack via the Marketplace or a paired Realms world — direct file installs aren't permitted.

Pocket Edition (Android & iOS)

1. Download the .mcpack in your mobile browser.
2. Open it with the Minecraft app when prompted.
3. Activate it under Settings → Global Resources.

Stacking multiple packs

Minecraft applies resource packs top-to-bottom — the pack at the top of the Selected list overrides anything below it. Put add-on packs (like a UI tweak) above your main pack, and keep large texture packs at the bottom.

Troubleshooting

• "Incompatible" warning: the pack was built for a different Minecraft version. Check the pack's pack_format and use a matching game version.
• Pack doesn't appear: it was extracted. Re-download and leave it zipped, or zip the folder so pack.mcmeta sits at the root.
• Pink-and-black textures: the pack is missing assets for blocks added in a newer version. Update the pack or switch Minecraft to its release version.
• Low FPS after installing: high-resolution packs (128× and above) need OptiFine or Sodium plus more allocated RAM.
